How to Set the Start Point on Your CNC Router (Falcon & Spartan Models)
If you’ve just purchased a CNC router, or you’re looking to improve accuracy in your machining process, learning how to correctly set your start point (zero working coordinate) is essential. This guide, designed for both beginners and professionals, explains how to do this on Mantech’s Falcon and Spartan CNC router models.
Accurate start point setting is critical for precision cutting and material safety. It tells your CNC router exactly where to begin machining, and ensures alignment with your design file.
What Is the CNC Router Start Point?
The start point (also known as the working coordinate zero) is the position on your material where the machine begins cutting. On CNC routers, this is usually set at the bottom-left corner for X and Y, and the top surface for Z.
Preparing to Set the Start Point
- Secure your material: Place your material firmly onto the CNC router’s bed.
- Switch on the vacuum pumps (if equipped): This ensures your material won’t shift during operation.
- Use the keypad controls on your machine or handheld controller to jog the spindle into position.
Setting the Start Point on Falcon Models
On the Falcon controller, use the following buttons:
XY = 0
– Sets X and Y origin.Z = 0
– Sets Z origin.
Jog the spindle to the corner of the material, then press XY = 0
.
Jog it to the centre-top of the material to set Z = 0
.
Setting the Start Point on Spartan Models
On Spartan models, setting the coordinates involves:
Hold Shift
+ Press XY = 0
to set the Z coordinate.
Use XY = 0
on its own to set X and Y.
Tip: Hold Shift
while pressing Z = 0
to clear the Z axis.
Once set, your display should read X = 0.00
, Y = 0.00
, and Z = 0.00
.
Important Reminder
Always zero your Z coordinate with the vacuum pumps switched on for best accuracy on vacuum bed-equipped routers.
Why This Matters for Your Business
Setting your CNC router start point correctly saves time, avoids costly material waste, and produces reliable results. Whether you’re a professional or hobbyist, mastering this simple step boosts your machine’s productivity.
